:: Safety First: Discuss Camp Safety With Your Child

Its time for the family to go camping, but do you have all you need to have a safe and fun experience? Camping with children is fun as long as you have the correct supplies so that you can camp safely. First of all, a completely stocked first aid kit should be available. This kit should contain supplies to clean and dress any wounds. Sunscreen is very important with the constant exposure to the sun rays. Bug repellent is also essential with being out in nature. It is a must that children are aware of their boundaries when camping. If there is poison ivy, show the kids where it is. By doing this they will learn what it looks like and know to stay away from it. Keep on hand some anti itch lotion in case someone accidentally gets in poison ivy or gets bug bites. Young children should be watched closely when doing cooking, as most cooking while camping is done over a fire. Let children know that they can’t take any bedding, clothing, or anything else flammable near the fire either. Swimming needs to be discussed and everyone aware of when, where, and with whom swimming is allowed. Food needs to be stored in sealed containers to prevent attracting bugs or wildlife into the campsite. Plenty of clean water should be available for everyone. Wildlife should be left alone and not played with. Remember you are visiting their home. Flashlights or lanterns are good so that when its dark you are able to see where you are going. A good weather radio is important to keep an ear on what could be coming your way. A cellphone is a wise choice in case there is an emergency. With all these supplies and talking with your children, your entire family should have a wonderful and safe camping trip.
